Electrodiagnostic Medicine -NCS/EMG (i.e, “Nerve Testing”)
Before precise treatment options can be recommended, oftentimes, a complete evaluation of the potential sources of pain or dysfunction is required. Including or excluding potential causes of a patient’s symptoms is a key step in arriving at their diagnosis.
About
Understanding Electrodiagnostic Medicine
Electrodiagnostic testing is a comprehensive evaluation used to assess sources of limb pain, numbness, or weakness as a result of spinal nerve or peripheral nerve compression, or due to intrinsic nerve or muscle disorders. Commonly diagnosed conditions include carpal tunnel syndrome, compressed (“pinched”) nerves from herniated spinal discs or other structures inside and outside of the spine, spinal stenosis (narrowing), and intrinsic issues within the nerves themselves such as neuropathy.

Complete Nerve Testing Components
At Regen Ortho Center in Alpharetta, GA, we perform complete standard of care electrodiagnostic evaluations which consist of two essential parts:
Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS):
- Measures how well electrical signals travel through your nerves
- Evaluates nerve function and identifies areas of damage or compression
Needle Electromyography (EMG):
- Involves inserting a fine needle electrode into muscle tissue
- Provides detailed information about individual muscle fibers’ electrical activity
Note: According to AANEM guidelines, nerve conduction studies without needle EMG do not meet professional standards.
Purpose of Electrodiagnostic Testing
Electrodiagnostic medicine is used to:
- Diagnose peripheral nerve disorders and localize nerve lesions
- Differentiate between nerve root, plexus, and peripheral nerve problems
- Distinguish between demyelinating and axonal nerve damage
- Evaluate neuromuscular junction disorders
- Monitor disease progression and treatment response
